Altra curiosita' per quanto riguarda lo spelling: il nome della "Z", che in America si pronuncia "zee" e in Gran Bretagna/Australia "zed".
L'ortografia inglese è talmente illogica che c'è chi dice che "fish" si potrebbe scrivere "ghoti":

"o" come -o- in "women"
"ti" come -ti- in "nation".Effettivamente, ci sono almeno sette modi di pronunciare "-ough", esemplificati da:

Come in italiano, una parola inglese può essere divisa soltanto fra due sillabe. A differenza dell'italiano o del francese, però, gran parte delle sillabe in inglese iniziano con una vocale es. fright-en-ing (Nonostante le storpiature che si vedono sulla stampa italiana, non c'è altro modo accettabile di dividere questa parola.)
Una parola che viene pronunciata come una sola sillaba, a prescindere dal numero di vocali che contiene, non può mai essere divisa: es. taught; blade; loan; lone
Le parole composte si dividono nelle loro parti componenti: es. wide-eyed; for-ever, o al limite, for-ev-er.

spasmodic = discontinuo, intermettente, saltuario (salvo in campo medico dove prevale la derivazione da "spasm"). Per il concetto di "attesa spasmodica", bisogna cercare un'altra traduzione.
stage = stadio [di avanzamento], palcoscenico ecc. ["stage" come "periodo di apprendimento" è una parola francese e risulta incomprensibile in inglese]
trivial = insignificante, banale, frivolo (da cui "Trivial Pursuit")
